In the family archives, there
is a document written in 1337 which notes that
the lands of San Martino Alfieri were already
"vineati a philari"--rows of grapevines.
On these hills that gently slope down to the
river Tanaro, grape cultivation has always been
the mainstay of the economy.
Today, in the best “sorì”
(the location in the vineyard with the best southern
exposure to the sun) with vines more than 60 years
old, a great quality of Barbera grape is produced.
The Marchesi Alfieri estate has a surface area
of nearly 24 hectares of cultivated vineyards
of which 15 hectares is planted in vines bearing
the Barbera grape varietal..
